Volunteer at MS Walk 2014

Salamu Alaykum!

For the 2nd year in a row, Mac Give Mississauga is taking part in the MS Walk on May 25th inshallah. Everyone ages 14+ is welcome to join us.

Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to gain rewards. If you are in high school this is a great opportunity to get your volunteer hours.

The MS Walk is a community event that brings together people touched by multiple sclerosis (MS). At the MS Walk, people affected by MS connect with others who understand the daily realities of their disease.

Every year over 65,000 participants in more than 160 communities across Canada gather at the MS Walk to engage with each other and raise vital funds for people living with MS. Come Volunteer with us on May 26th, 2013 from 8am to 3pm at Mississauga’s Celebration Square. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers.

Volunteering not only benefits the MS Society, it is a rewarding experience for those who choose to give their time. It allows you to support a great cause while meeting new people, learning new skills and broadening personal experiences. Volunteers are an integral part and may help with setting up the event, registration, preparing and serving meals, meeting and greeting the MS Walk participants as they arrive and cheering them through the finish line at the end, route marshals, providing information to participants, etc. There is a job for everybody!

Last day to register is May 14th, 2013. Don’t delay! Register today!

Muslims for White Ribbon

The White Ribbon Campaign is the world's largest movement of men that work to end violence against all females. It encourages healthy relationships and promotes gender equality. The campaign was founded by 3 men in Toronto back in 1991, and one of its founders was Jack Layton. These three men began this campaign with a pledge “to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls”, and since then the campaign has spread to over 60 countries around the world.

On February 12th, 2009, a Muslim Pakistani American student, Aasiya Zubair, was murdered by her divorced husband. It was an incident that shook up the Muslim American community and acknowledged the domestic abuse hidden inside. As a reaction to this horrific incident, Muslim Presence launched the Muslims for White Ribbon Campaign.

The Muslim for White Ribbon Campaign consists of fathers, grandfathers, husbands, uncles, sons and friends that strongly believe that violence against all females must come to an end. Their objectives are to:
  • Break the silence on violence against women in the Muslim community by encouraging Mosques and organizations to sponsor awareness events and deliver a Friday Khutba  on this issue.
  • Promote healthy relationships through education.
  • Create partnerships among Mosques, women’s organizations, and social agencies to create a future without violence against women.

The Campaign will run from November 25, 2013 [International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women] and culminate in White Ribbon Days at Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS) Convention at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (December 27 – 29).
Please visit http://muslimsforwhiteribbon.com to make a pledge to end violence against all women and young girls, and to find out more on what you can do to help.

Community Clean Up at MAC's Adopted Parks

With the blessings of Allah the Muslim Association of Canada has been blessed with the opportunity to adopt not one but two parks. The names of the parks are Pine Tree Hill and Sawmill Creek park. On July 27th, 2013, the 19th of Ramadan 1434, the MAC Give team held it's first Community Clean Up of Pine Tree Hill and Sawmill Creek park.
It was of great joy to see the goodness in our community by having more than 30 volunteers of different ages with such high spirits attending and showing their concerns towards our environment. 11:00 AM, we gathered at Pine Tree Park started off by registration and selling of our new MAC Give shirts.

After registration participants gathered under a tree and had a quick icebreaker. When we finished our icebreaker Asma Maryam Ali, our speaker of the day, gave a short enlightening talk on environmental stewardship. The focus of the talk was on how the Earth grants us security when we care about it and invest in it. In her talk Asma spoke about 4 principles for environmental stewards to follow. The principles are:

1. Developing a relationship with nature - Take the opportunity to go out and enjoy nature by thinking and reflecting about it. If you don't have a relationship with nature you will not respect it.

2. Respect for nature - We must have deep respect for nature in order to practice environmental stewardship. God gave nature its own purpose and its own life and so as environmental stewards we must respect nature and honour it as a living being and not just an object we use.

3. Reciprocity and that means when given something from nature us, we have to give back to it too.

4. The responsibility we have towards our nature.

After the talk participants were divided into teams. Each team was supplied with garbage bags and garbage picking sticks. After that we proceeded on our journey of cleaning our adopted parks. We walked through a forest looking for garbage in every corner. Beauty of the trees surrounding us, and rivers flowing by. It was amazing an amazing experience. We found all sorts of different objects that people throw away, the most interesting garbage was a CPU in the river! Who would have ever thought that we would find a CPU? It was fascinating to notice the different types of plants on the grounds that grow near trees and the small insects that live relying on them. By 12:45 we finished cleaning the 2 parks and we managed to gather up with the rest of the teams underneath the tree where we started our walk. Allhamudil'Allah all the volunteers managed to fill more than 6 big garbage bags. This shows how diligent everyone was and how it was an event that was taken seriously.
We parted ways by a closing duaa and thanking everyone for their participation. It was a really fascinating experience and it was quite unfortunate that we couldn't spend more time with the environment but Insh'Allah there will more community clean ups to come so stay tune! Truly it is a blessing to have the opportunity to be environmental stewards and we thank everyone who attended this event, may Allah SWT reward you for your hard work in this holy month!
